Gil also had given his time to community nonprofits, such as the Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation, A Keiki’s Dream and Legal Aid Society. At the county level, Gil has been director of the county Department of Public Works and Environmental Management. He has served as director of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources and state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Gil has held director positions in state and county agencies. He is a successful lawyer with the firm Takitani Agaran Jorgensen & Wildman LLLP. Prior to moving to the state Senate, Gil served in the state House from 2009. Currently, he is a state Senator representing the 5th District covering Wailuku, Waihe'e and Kahului, having held the post since 2013. While many journalists live for the major stories, the disasters and the scandals of government, Earl placed an emphasis on community news, reporting on the everyday happenings of residents, the Eagle Scout winners and high school sports. Ever the journalist, he convinced his commanders to print a weeklyīattalion newspaper, High Angle, to boost morale with stories of soldiers throughout the 442nd. In Italy, Germany and France - earning a Bronze Star - with the highly decorated unit consisting of mostly Army in Marchġ943 and was assigned to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team 522nd Field Artillery Battalion. With World War II raging, Earl joined the U.S. (He was editor of the Maui High newspaper as well.) Upon graduating in 1939, Earl impressed The Maui News editors enough to hire him to cover sports and news.
