Eventually though, the Allies started to win the war without it, and thought it was better just to keep doing what they were doing rather than rely on this bizarre experimental material, so the idea’s never really been properly tested (people like the Mythbusters have tried small pykrete ships, which just don’t have the thermal mass to survive above the freezing point of water for long you need to think big with this stuff). Several promising tests were conducted and enthusiasm for the idea was high for a while. For obvious reasons, pykrete ships would have been most useful at fairly extreme latitudes, and a low surface area-to-volume ratio is also important (so the ship needs to be very large, preferably with an enclosed design). The material is – naturally – far, far cheaper than steel, as well as being naturally buoyant. The binding effect of the cellulose fibres in the wood makes the ice dramatically less brittle, comparable in strength to concrete, and because wood is a poor conductor of heat it also insulates the ice from temperature changes and makes it melt far more slowly than normal ice. Known as pykrete, from the name of the man who first suggested the idea, Geoffrey Pyke, it was a tough, relatively lightweight and extremely cheap construction material made by freezing water mixed with sawdust or wood pulp. Well, to be more precise, due to the difficulties involved with working in ice it would have been more of a great big floating mass than a ‘ship’ in the traditional sense, and it wasn’t exactly ice, either they tried to develop a new composite material for the purpose. The Pokédex describes Avalugg, with a group of Bergmite huddled on its back, as resembling “an aircraft carrier made of ice.” This would strike me as a rather uninteresting and honestly pretty silly comparison (which, let’s be honest, would not be atypical for the Pokédex), if not for the fact that there was in fact a time during World War II when the Allied Powers actually tried to build an aircraft carrier made of ice. Bergmite and Avalugg… well, there’s something there… let’s take a look. For some reason Game Freak’s designers seem to have trouble getting past “this Pokémon has ice powers” as the central feature of what these Ice-types are and do. Black and White produced three of them, and I condemned all three (for different reasons, of course) later on, Glaceon was partially responsible for my coming to the conclusion that we should just be done with Eeveelutions and move on to something else. It's special attack is Avalanche Spike which releases a barrage of icicles from his tail.Single-typed Ice Pokémon do not have a terribly good record on this blog. It was first discovered when sailors were in cold Northern waters, and saw that all of the ice bergs surrounding them was actually a herd of Stegisberg. Pokedex Entry: Despite it’s massive size, this Pokemon is buoyant and can swim very well. Some trainers even carve them for contests or battles. Pokedex Entry: Its spines can be any shape depending on its wild or domestic living conditions. The connection continues all throughout evolution. Pokedex Entry: This Pokemon attaches itself to its trainer like a baby bird to its mother. WHY AREN’T THERE ANY STEGOSAURUS POKEMON, HUH?

While DASH is intended for use by acute care hospitals, facilities may consider sharing their results with their healthcare coalition and/or state to provide a more robust understanding of local and regional supply capacities. DASH was developed for pre-incident planning and is not intended for use during a disaster. While based on subject matter expert recommendations grounded in historical or projected incidents, DASH is not designed to cover all situations for which hospitals should plan. DASH does not estimate staffing or space needs or address the systems planning necessary for an effective response. It does not require or dictate to hospitals what supplies they should have. Please read the instructions and refer to them as you complete each module.ĭASH is a voluntary planning tool designed to help hospital emergency planners and supply chain staff determine what supplies they may need during an MCI or infectious disease emergency in their community to ensure adequate supplies are available at the time of an incident. Most users will elect to complete one module or a segment of the module per sitting as inputs cannot be saved in the tool. Each module also incorporates pediatric sizes and specific medication needs as appropriate to the incident. Recommendations are based on user inputs about the size of the hospital, risks in the community, regional role/designation of the hospital, and other factors.ĭASH is comprised of several modules which, taken together, can provide hospitals a holistic view of the supplies needed to address various types of incidents. More bookkeeping and play time spent book keeping for the players, in return for more slower fights and possibly you might get the excitment of running out mid fight, but usually it'll be well, we're getting a bit short on arrows, better pick some up. The bargain offered is: if you, the player, do extra work tracking shots and how many arrows you save after a fight, and how many you rescue from the bad guys after a fight, and compare to your carrying capacity, then, for this extra work and loss of play time, you are rewarded by. It means you lose a ranged attack and have to go melee, perhaps it creates a learning curve, after that you find a way around, oh well we have N 'arrow attacks' before switching. It’s only if they have to bank a shit-ton of arrows for a seige, or something, that they will find out the real story. A day of producing no arrows resets to 50.Īnyway, point is that this could have been true the whole time, and the characters don’t know, coz they haven’t tested the limits of the quiver – as long as they’re using less than 50 arrows a day, it looks like a forever quiver. after a Long Rest of not producing arrows) it can only make 25 decent, 25 shitty, and 25 splinters.Īnd just keep halving the numbers each day if it produced the day before’s max decent arrow count.Ī day of producing arrows less than the max decent quantity will make the next day’s max the same as today. On day 1 it will make up to 50 decent arrows, then the 51st to 100th arrows that day are substandard (half damage), then the 101st to 150th arrows are un-fireable splinters. Eg, maybe the PCs aren’t aware that actually the quiver gets tired. No need to tell them every detail of the quiver’s powers. Would an endless quiver be too strong at this level or just a cool bit of flavour that stops them needing to count arrows? I am not running a survival game and we only closely track food and amo when away from civilization for a longer period of time. So far I have added a few other very weak homebrew magic items for low level characters. Basically if they put in a standard arrow they can now draw an endless amount of that arrow type. I still want them to have a magic item so I was thinking of giving them a quiver that allows for them to have an endless amount of amo based on what they put into it. So I don't want to give them any +1 or higher arrows. They rolled really well on stats and have gone down the path of using a long bow. Currently my Ranger outputs the most damage. It is the most common non-brain solid tumor diagnosed in children. Continued Movement Toward More Intense TreatmentĪbout 800 children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma each year in the United States. “So, while tandem transplant is the current standard, we’ll have additional information on whether alternative approaches can further improve outcomes for these children,” Dr. Other treatment approaches have also shown promise in children with high-risk neuroblastoma, she said, and NCI is supporting COG-led trials testing some of these approaches. Since that time, a tandem transplant-with the same initial (or induction) and pretransplant (or conditioning) chemotherapy regimen used in the trial-has become the standard treatment for most children in the United States with high-risk neuroblastoma, explained Nita Seibel, M.D., head of Pediatric Solid Tumor Therapeutics in NCI’s Cancer Therapy and Evaluation Program.įurther advances or treatment options are likely to emerge, Dr. The trial’s results were initially presented more than 3 years ago at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting. However, they did not have worse side effects. However, undergoing two transplants-called a tandem transplant-is more intensive, and the children who received tandem transplants had longer hospital stays, the researchers reported. Children who received two transplants separated by several weeks lived substantially longer without their cancer progressing or developing any other cancer-related problems, an outcome known as event-free survival, than children who underwent a single transplant, reported Julie Park, M.D., of Seattle Children’s Hospital, and her colleagues August 27 in JAMA. That’s according to the results of an NCI-supported clinical trial conducted by the Children’s Oncology Group (COG).Ĭhildren in the trial had high-risk neuroblastoma, meaning that their tumors had features that make the cancer particularly aggressive and difficult to treat. For many children with advanced forms of neuroblastoma, receiving two separate stem cell transplants as part of their treatment is more beneficial than receiving one. When testing the scanner against malware samples, I got decent results. This is on par with competitors’ quick scans, which usually take anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes. Note that Malwarebytes doesn’t have a default full system scan option, so if you want to check your entire system for malware, you need to use the custom scan and select your C: drive from the available options (which is a little annoying!).ĭuring my tests, the Threat Scan was fast - it took 1 minute and 33 seconds to scan over 260,000 files on my device. Scans key areas of your device’s system, memory, and startup programs.Malwarebytes for Windows offers 3 types of scans: Malwarebytes also employs machine learning technology that is capable of learning about new threats without any human input. Its scanner uses a large database containing millions of known malware threats, including trojans, worms, ransomware, spyware, and rootkits, as well as heuristic analysis to flag new malware files that haven’t yet been added to its database. Malwarebytes’s virus scanner is very good - it provides both on-demand scans and real-time protection to block the vast majority of malware on Windows, Mac, and Android devices. Malwarebytes Security Features Virus Scanner While not as good as top competitors like Norton and Bitdefender, Malwarebytes is affordable, offers a 14-day free trial, and provides a generous 60-day money-back guarantee on all premium plans. However, when competitors offer better antivirus protection along with more features (and for a similar price), it’s hard for me to wholeheartedly recommend Malwarebytes. Unfortunately, Malwarebytes lacks many of the essential features of a premium antivirus, including a firewall, data breach monitor, device optimization tools, parental controls, and a password manager - but it’s a decent choice for users who want a simple antivirus without a lot of extras. It’s a decent option for hiding online activity, but it’s missing a lot of the features and functionalities found in standalone VPN competitors. You also get a secure VPN if you upgrade to the Malwarebytes Premium + Privacy VPN plan, which includes a secure VPN. I really like Browser Guard, a free web security browser extension that blocks trackers, pop-up ads, phishing sites, and exploit attacks. Malwarebytes also offers a couple of additional features. In terms of real-time protection, it successfully blocked 98% of the malware files, which is also excellent. Malwarebytes is a minimalistic, easy-to-use antivirus program that provides good protection against malware, but it doesn’t have a lot of the important protections that the best antiviruses of 2023 include in their plans.ĭuring my testing, it detected 95% of the malware files I had previously downloaded to my device, which is a pretty good result.
